and Lyrical Abstraction. She was born and raised in New York City, where she continues to reside. Mason was born in Harlem in 1932 to Alice Trumbull
Mason and Warwood Edwin Mason. Despite several childhood diseases, including whooping cough and pneumomnia, Mason began painting at an early age and enrolled in the High School of Music and Art in 1946. Mason cultivated
an interest in modernist music and art throughout the 1940s and 50s, and began frequenting the Museum of Modern Art in her spare time.
